Te Araroa Chapter 6 - In the land of snow (2)

We literally just got down from the "cruel snowy ridges with snow waist deep" to start a long long day of walking in the hot sunshine. Well, would you believe it? :) Welcome to New Zealand, the land of endless possibilities. It was a long long hot hot thirsty day. But during the 489723611 steps we took we had some pretty good views and the Rangitata river was waiting for us at the end of that day - this time no walking 60km aroung to the closest bridge, but straight ahead. And during that day we even crossed the kingdom of Rohan, pretty gooood! In the evening on the Potts river bank we were lucky enough to find a tent spot between cow dungs :)

A ještě jsme viděli království Rohan z Pána prstenů, dozdobrý :)

good night

The next day, there was the crossing. The river is braided and very wide, at least 7 km, so it is not a fast business. We started slowly and steadily, choosing good braids and shallow waters. Some waters were really fast and deep, so we tried to avoid them having to go up or down stream. Luckily, the waters weren't cloudy, so in around 2 hours, we were safely on the other side. Pretty impressive. But not the end of the day, we still had a lot to walk, so we kept on going, but spirits were high as we managed! We met some hunters on the way up the valley. The trail up bush stream valley to Crooked spur hut showed us some exposed sections and amazing Sinclair range. Mesopotamia station sure knows the coolest location... We met with Oz hunters at the hut again and mice were pretty rude that night! :)

Tak další den jsme řeku Rangitata doopravdy přebrodili. Řečiště široké a rozvětvené, vybírali jsme pečlivě mělčí a pomalejší proudy, občas jsme si museli trochu zajít.
Cesta údolím / roklí vzhůru nám místy nabídla hodně vzdušné sekce a rozhledy. A myši byly teda tu noc velice nezdvořilé  :)

Remembering Virginia and her song "I'm buleeeeeet proooof" that I sing when things are getting rougher :)

This is Roman and his face expression when I ask him if we can have MORE chocolate.
NO

This chapter's name is "in the land of snow 2" for a reason. There was fresh snow just few metres up the hut the next morning and a thick layer of cloud.
It is quite hard for me to find words to decribe our journey, because all was so amazin, beautiful, breathtaking, powerful and emotional. This section wasn't different. We spent the next 2 days in total solitude surrounded only by nature, walked through the snow, seen scenes that can only be creted in that moment. Solitude in the nature can make you very happy. And there is the overpowering feeling of freedom.

tomorrow, up that way! A zítra tam, do nejvyššího bodu Te Araroa

Royal hut

Musterer's life / život pastevců
In the next two days we were supposed to get to Tekapo, that was quite a bit away and in the same time reach the highest point of Te Araroa - Stag saddle. It was a true grunt up from Royal hut to the saddle as we were deep in the snow again. But the reward was sweet enough - We could see the whole Lake Tekapo and Aoraki (Mount Cook) and the highest ranges in NZ. Seeing the whole Lake Tekapo showed us also the lenght of it we needed to walk the next day :)
We dediced not to follow the trail, but due to nice weather we took the ridge line and ejoyed the views. We left it a bit too early and ended up on the original trail, which, not surprisingly was a swamp :) We managed to get to beautiful and cozy Camp stream hut and that night we saw another human being Nicole from Alaska after a long time.
And the next day we walked to Tekapo, the longest day so far. 718 km walked. Sweet life.

A další den jsme došli do Tekapa, zatím nejdelší den 34 km. Ušli jsme cca 718 km zatím. Život je fajn.
